When a Purse is More Than a Fashion Statement

Posted by gansie on December 11, 2008

picture-50Women make powerful statements all of the time.  Sometimes it’s through how they look, sometimes it’s through what they say and sometimes it’s through the silence of their wallet.

As much as we may not like it, money is power in this country.  And fortunately, women are really starting to come into their own.  The Women’s Campaign Forum Foundation just released Vote With Your Purse 2.0: Women’s Online Giving and Offline Power which discusses women’s trends for donating online, specifically in the political realm .

Here are some stats:

Women have both the financial resources and drive for social change that are needed for them to have
a significant impact on politics:
• Women command more than half of U.S. wealth and are on track to hold two-thirds of it by 2030.
• Women vote more frequently than men, engage in more community activism and volunteer at higher rates than
men do.
• Women are incredibly generous donors to charitable causes – single women are “the most generous donors” with
nearly 40% more likely than single men to give their money to charitable causes.

But there’s still work to be done.  WCF Foundation also notes that “Even though women direct 80 percent of household purchases, women make less than 30 percent of federal political donations.”  So women, show your power, make your choice heard – put your money where your mouth is. Donate.

Make your purse more than a fashion statement.

Don’t Forget the Ladies…

Posted by joyinhome on December 10, 2008

Linda R. Hirshman’s article “Where are the New Jobs for Women” (December 9, 2008) made a very important point — we cannot afford to leave women out of any job expansion or economic stimulus plan.  In this day and age most households with children need the income from two jobs to make ends meet. Not only do we need more jobs, but we need to increase the value, parity and pay for jobs traditionally held by women, increase the number of women in better paying non-traditional fields and make sure careers of the future are open to all genders.

Occupational segregation of women is not biologically determined, and we only need to look at the more than 200,000 women currently serving in the military to see opportunities to change this construct. Many of these military women are holding what would be considered non-traditional jobs, but when they leave the military their skills are often not recognized and utilized.

Much that needs to be done to fix our economy and women can and will play an important role.  We must be sure that any plan increases opportunities for everyone, including women, who must also support their families.

Wo/Manly Communication

Posted by businesswom on December 10, 2008

boardroom4Women in the workplace. Men in the workplace. How do these gender dynamics affect how the work gets done?

Power and aggressiveness or equality and emotions?

Short meetings and board room debates or office visits and hallway pow wows?

A slammed door here and there, forgotten tomorrow or feel the wrath of past transgressions in a reply all e-mail weeks later?

Listed line items that need to be changed based on fact or suggested line items that need to be changed because the first way doesn’t feel right?

Some of these may be clichés, but clichés are such because they are true…Well, most of them [disclaimer for the above statements]. Besides, I never really say which characteristics are manly and womanly.

Having been part of a 10% female staff and then transitioning to a workplace that is virtually 100% female, I certainly noticed a huge difference in how the work gets done. Granted, these are two extremes. Neither way is better than the other, just different. Right?

It’s Worth A Shot

Posted by gansie on December 8, 2008

health1Women are the hardest hit during an economic downtown.  Women are the majority of caregivers.  And women never seem to get the care they need.  According to WebMd: “Almost half of women surveyed in a national poll said they had failed to seek health care for themselves.”

Now, I’m not a doctor and don’t have all the stats.  But I do know that prevention is where its at.  And at least from personal experience, I’ve learned that flu shots are completely necessary.  My mom, a nursery school teacher, gets one every year.  But that makes sense, she’s around snotty 3 year olds all day.  But me, I work in a very small office and never really thought it was necessary.  Well, that was until the flu TOOK ME OUT.  I was horizontal from Monday morning until, well, I’m doing work from my bed the next Monday.  The flu is sweats, and chills, and coughing, and aching, and throwing up, and whining, and watching an entire season of LOST.

The flu is serious, yet fleeting.  But I’ve learned my lesson about prevention.  Get your flu shot, get your breast examined, get your colon inspected, get your eyes checked…  Be healthy.  Spread health.  Be a healthy woman.

How do you Google?

Posted by joyinhome on December 1, 2008

google1Have you ever Googled yourself to see what search results come up? If not, you should. Want more? Get the dets! Why? If the information isn’t so flattering, catch it before you are actively job searching.

On the flip side – if you Google yourself and nothing pops up – that’s just as bad in the eyes of recruiters and potential employers.
